portfolio > GDK series

My work investigates the surface of the human body as a site of personal, cultural, and social complexity. Drawing from research in tattooing, medical modeling, and embodied experience, I explore skin as both a boundary and a record—marking the separation between the internal and external world while chronicling the traces of that divide.

Wounds, whether accidental or intentional, serve as evidence of our vulnerability and humanity. They mirror the artistic process of mark-making, where each intervention—be it injury or augmentation—becomes subject to time, healing, and transformation. These marks evolve, fade, and layer, forming what I consider phenomenological palimpsests: artworks that reflect the layered nature of human experience and invite viewers into a kind of viewing forensics.

The GDK (Guns Don’t Kill?) series, begun in 2011, continues this exploration through the medium of silverpoint. Traditionally delicate and precise, silverpoint is here repurposed—punched, rolled, stabbed, and drawn—to evoke the violence of gunshot wounds. Each piece is small and intimate, designed for close, contemplative viewing. Hidden within the white floater frame, the embossed silver text Guns Don’t Kill? reveals itself only upon close inspection, challenging the viewer to confront the tension between visibility and denial, beauty and brutality.
